La Serenissima
Venice is known as La Serenissima - The Serene City. This image reminds us that while she was once youthful and pristine, the ravages of the canal and lagoon water are etched in every building's facade, weathering colors and eroding surfaces. Yet, with characteristic Venetian resillience, life continues, as seen in the plants that thrive in nooks and crannies. The colors of the shutters, the design of the glass windows still provide reminders of the lady when she was at her best. She remains, to our admittedly biased eyes, elegantly decrepit.
