In the fall, vineyards become a glorious tapestry of colors. Living in the wine country, we see many impressive photographs of this scenery.

But we wanted to develop images of the vineyard that were less traditional and more abstract. In the spirit of finding a new way to appreciate the fruits of the vine, we have taken a closer look at colorful fall grape leaves. What has emerged is a body of work that we call the "Vineyard Tapestry" series.

Each "tapestry" began, in the vineyard, either as an image of a single grape leaf, or as an image of a collection of grape leaves on the vine. In the studio it becomes a creative delight to see what patterns and textures emerge from the leaves. Sometimes the tapestry has a bold and graphic design, while at other times the design is softer and more delicate. Sometimes it is clear that what has been developed originated in the natural world, but at other times, it would be hard to tell that the image once was a leaf. Just as each leaf is unique, each tapestry is unique, and when we are lucky, a single leaf will generously give up multiple interesting images.

There are two Collections in this gallery. Because the patterns and designs often remind us of particular types of tapestry or rugs, the first is the Navajo/Ikat/Kilim Collection. Tapestries that clearly retain the image of the grape are gathered in the Grape Collection.

We hope you enjoy this new view of the delights of the vineyard.
